Visas and residence permits to Portugal
Let’s consider the key options for visas and residence permits that can be obtained in Portugal:
- D2 Visa. This is the name of the visa program that provides residency for entrepreneurs. This is a program aimed at enabling business owners and entrepreneurs to obtain a residence permit. It is a good alternative to the Golden Visa in Portugal.
- D3 Visa. This is a residence for highly qualified professionals, which is granted to professionals of the relevant specialization (Highly qualified activity).
- D7 Visa. This visa program provides residency based on passive income. If your passive income is from €870 per month and comes from sources outside Portugal, this option is suitable for you. The income for participation in this program can be: pension, dividends from securities, royalties or income from movable or immovable property.
- D8 Visa. This is a residency for digital nomads. There are two types of Digital Nomad Visa. The first of these is a short-term visa of up to 1 year, which cannot be exchanged for residency. It is intended for those professionals who want to live in Portugal temporarily, while working remotely. The second option is a resident visa, which is suitable for those who plan to stay in Portugal for more than a year.
- D6 visa. This is a residence based on reunification with a family member. It is available to those whose family member already has citizenship or residence in Portugal.
- Startup visa. Residency for startup founders is another popular option. Startup Visa is a great opportunity for those who intend to develop innovative entrepreneurial projects in Portugal. It is available not only for new startups, but also for those startups that are already operating and intend to move to Portugal.
- D1 visa. This is a residence based on employment. To apply for this visa, you need to obtain permission from the Portuguese employment center, which justifies the need to invite a foreign worker to a vacancy.
- D4 visa. This type of visa can also be called an educational residence. It is issued for two years. If the period of study is shorter, the applicant can apply for this visa only for the duration of the program. But if the study lasts longer, the visa can be extended in order to legally stay in Portugal until its completion.
- D5 visa. This is a student residence, which is subject to the same rules as in the previous case.
- D9 visa. This is the name of the famous Golden Visa and residence based on investment. The key feature and advantage of this type of residence is that you only need to be in the country for 7 days in the first year, and 14 days in subsequent years. Participation in this investment program is available to those who invest in the Portuguese economy an amount of 500 thousand euros or make a donation of 250 thousand euros.
- Residence for school students. Children under the age of 18 can obtain a residence permit independent of their parents based on their school attendance. This option is available to students starting in the 7th grade.
Let’s consider some more options for living in Portugal.
Certificate of Registration for EU Citizens (CRUE) and Citizenship
Any citizen of the European Union, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland and the Principality of Andorra is required to obtain such a certificate in Portugal if they plan to stay in the country for more than 90 days. The document is issued for 5 years. It can be obtained at the municipality of the applicant’s place of residence.
As for citizenship, it is available after 5 years of legal residence in the country. This period begins from the moment the person submits their application for first residence.
