Company registration in Qatar
Qatar is not only one of the richest countries in the world, but also a regional business hub, which is actively developing after hosting the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Rapid modernization, a favorable tax system and a strategic location between Europe and Asia make Qatar an attractive jurisdiction for international companies seeking to expand their presence in the Middle East markets.
Main forms of companies for foreign investors
Qatar is open to foreign capital, but regulates it through a licensing system and special zones. Foreign entrepreneurs can set up a business in the following formats:
- Limited Liability Company (LLC) — the most common form, requires a local partner with a share of at least 51%. Exceptions apply to companies in free economic zones.
- Branch Office — a branch of a foreign company operating under a contract with a government agency or a Qatari company.
- Free Zone Company (FZC) — a company registered with the Qatar Financial Centre (QFC) or Qatar Free Zones Authority (QFZA). 100% foreign ownership, preferential taxation and simplified exchange controls are allowed here.
To set up a company, you must obtain a license from the relevant authority (MOCI, QFC or QFZA), submit the charter, confirmation of the address and ownership structure. The procedure takes from 2 to 4 weeks, depending on the chosen format.
Tax conditions in Qatar
Qatar has one of the most loyal tax systems in the region:
- Corporate tax — 10% on profits of non-residents or foreign companies.
- There is no tax on dividends, royalties and interest.
- VAT has not yet been introduced, although its introduction is planned within the framework of the GCC agreement.
- QFC and QFZA have tax holidays for the first 20 years of operation or a fixed rate of 10%.
Qatar has signed more than 60 international agreements on the avoidance of double taxation, in particular with Ukraine, which makes it a reliable jurisdiction for international structuring.
Bank account and currency control
After registering a company, you can open a corporate account in any Qatari bank (QNB, Doha Bank, Commercial Bank of Qatar). This requires constituent documents, a certificate of registration, the owner’s passport and confirmation of sources of funds. Qatar’s banking sector is strictly AML/KYC compliant and works with the FATF, so business transparency is a must. Companies are required to keep accounting records and submit annual reports to the tax authorities, and large entities are required to undergo an audit.
