In this text, in this text, we plan to consider the main steps that need to be taken to obtain a license, its types and the requirements for broadcasting companies.
What is a broadcasting license?
A license for television and radio broadcasting is an official permit issued by the regulator in the field of television and radio broadcasting (in Ukraine – the National Council for Television and Radio Broadcasting).
This license allows speech over the air, cable, satellite or digital platforms. The term of validity of the license may vary, but in each case the license defines the conditions under which the company can conduct its activities in the broadcasting field.
Types of broadcasting licenses
Broadcasting licenses are divided into different types depending on the method of signal transmission.
The main ones include:
- Broadcasting – it is carried out through radio frequencies and provides wide coverage of territories. Such a license is granted as part of a competitive selection for free frequencies.
- Cable broadcasting – provides signal transmission through cable networks and mostly covers individual settlements or regions.
- Satellite broadcasting – the signal is transmitted via satellite, which allows coverage of large areas, including international markets.
- Digital broadcasting – uses digital platforms and technologies that provide high-quality sound and image.
The process of obtaining a license

The first step is to prepare and submit the necessary documents to the National Council for Television and Radio Broadcasting. Such documents include:

- Financial documentation that demonstrates the company’s ability to provide stable broadcasting.
- Information about the beneficiaries and the management of the company.

After submitting an application, the regulator assesses it, checking the applicant’s compliance with legal requirements and its technical capabilities to ensure broadcasting.

After a positive decision, the company pays a license fee, the amount of which depends on the type of broadcasting, coverage of the territory and the term of validity of the license.
