Applying for a foreign passport in Canada
Ukrainian citizens residing in Canada can now apply for a passport through the Ukrainian diplomatic missions there. Let’s take a closer look at the process. We’ll also discuss the services “Prikhodko&Partners”, a firm specializing in migration law, can provide in this category of cases.
Canada’s online passport application system
To schedule an appointment at the consular office to obtain a passport, you must do so through the EConsul online resource. To submit your documents, you must verify your identity using one of the following methods:
- using Diya.Signature;
- using BankID;
- using an EDS (electronic digital signature).
If you don’t have any of the above tools, you won’t be able to register. So, you’ll need to get one first and then log in.
Documents required for obtaining a foreign passport in Canada
Among such documents are:
- a valid Ukrainian citizen’s internal passport;
- identification code;
- previous international passport;
- an appointment at the Ukrainian Consulate in Canada.
When it comes to men, in this case, an extract from the Reserve+ application with the corresponding QR code is also required.
Peculiarities of obtaining a foreign passport for men
It’s important to note that consular offices do not have access to state registries. Therefore, some information must be verified independently. If you are a man of conscription age, before submitting your documents, you must:
- install the Reserve+ app;
- or generate a military registration certificate from the Diya app.
This will confirm your status as a conscript.

What problems may men face?The above algorithm cannot be used in all cases. Sometimes the extract is not generated because the Oberig database is missing some important data. What should you know about renewing your foreign passport?
At the end of October 2025, changes were adopted to the legal regulation of this issue. Passport renewals are only granted in exceptional cases. Most consulates no longer provide this service as usual. Therefore, two service options are no longer available:
- renewal of an expired foreign passport;
- pasting a photo of the child into one of the parents’ passport (now, as before the war, children are required to have their own document).
New foreign passports are issued through consulates located in Ottawa, Edmonton, Toronto, and other cities, a full list of which is readily available.
How to get a foreign passport for a child in Canada?
To begin, as with adults, you need to register on the EConsul website by selecting the appropriate option. The further procedure depends on the child’s age. If the child is over 12, their personal presence along with a legal guardian is required. If the child is over 14, an ID card must be provided.
