What are the requirements for obtaining a PRP

  • Residence in Germany during the last five years on the basis of temporary permit residence (TPR).
  • Availability of independent income necessary for a normal standard of living.
  • Payment of required contributions to mandatory pension insurance within 5 years or an equivalent amount.
  • The applicant’s absence of danger to public safety.
  • Having an employment permit, and for some professions also other permits for a certain type of activity (lawyers, doctors).
  • Adequate level of German language skills.
  • Basic knowledge about the legal and social rules.
  • Sufficient living space for oneself and family members living with the person (at least 12 square meters for persons over 6 years old, at least 10 square meters for persons under 6 years old).

Special conditions for certain categories of persons

  • If the spouse or registered life partner has German citizenship, foreign partners can obtain a PRP after 3 years, provided they have a sufficient command of the German language.
  • Parents of children with German citizenship can receive a PRP after 3 years of stay in Germany, if they have a TRP and regularly communicate with the child.
  • Asylum-seekers and refugees must cover only 51% of their living expenses from their own income. Knowledge of the German language at the A2 level is sufficient. If a person speaks German at a level of at least C1, it is possible to obtain a PRP after 3 years of residence in Germany.
  • Individuals with mental or physical illnesses or disabilities do not have to meet all requirements. Depending on the disability, they are exempt from certain conditions, such as ensuring their own means of subsistence, knowledge of the German language or payments to a pension fund.
  • It is not necessary for students to prove that they have paid 60 pension contributions. Students can also receive government support such as study allowance or housing allowance.
  • Foreign graduates of German universities who have already held an EU Blue Card for 2 years or a TRP for employment or self-employment can obtain a PRP after 2 years.

To receive a PRP, you need the following actions:

  • Submit an application;
  • Provide a valid foreign passport and an up-to-date biometric photo;
  • Confirm a 5-year stay in Germany with a residence permit;
  • Confirm the availability of income with the help of an employment contract, a certificate from the employer and a certificate of salary for the last 6 months. Self-employed and freelancers can submit their latest tax assessment;
  • Provide confirmation of the availability of living space (lease or sale agreement);
  • Confirm pension contributions (certificate of paid contributions);
  • Provide an insurance policy;
