GET SLOVAK CITIZENSHIP
Modern realities are forcing many Ukrainians to seek stability, security, and new perspectives outside their native country.
Obtaining Slovak citizenship is one of the most rational, understandable, and legally transparent paths to a full life in the European Union.
As a neighboring country with a close mentality, a clear language, and a stable economy, the Slovak Republic offers extremely comfortable conditions for immigration and integration.
If your goal is legalization in Europe, asset protection, and securing a European future for your children, it is time to turn to professionals.
As an expert in migration law, I will help you understand all the intricacies of the procedure to successfully obtain Slovak citizenship with minimal risks.
Why is a Slovak passport your best choice?
Slovakia is a full member of the EU, the Schengen Area, and the Eurozone. Successfully obtaining Slovak citizenship automatically makes you a citizen of the European Union, which grants you a wide range of rights and freedoms.
The main advantages of a Slovak passport for Ukrainians:
- Absolute freedom of movement: You get the right to live, study, and work freely in any of the 27 EU countries without the need for work visas or residence permits.
- Global mobility: The Slovak passport is ranked among the strongest in the world and opens visa-free (or simplified) entry to over 180 countries, including the USA, Canada, Australia, and Great Britain.
- Social protection and medicine: Access to the advanced European healthcare system, pensions, and social guarantees on par with native Europeans.
- Business and finance: The opportunity to freely open accounts in reliable European banks, register and scale a business in Europe under favorable tax conditions, and take out mortgages at low European rates.
- Education for children: The right to free or preferential higher education in the best universities in Slovakia and other countries of the European Union.
How to obtain Slovak citizenship: Legal grounds
The migration legislation of the Slovak Republic (Act No. 40/1993 Coll. on State Citizenship) clearly regulates the conditions under which a foreigner can apply for citizen status.
Let’s consider the main ways most often used by Ukrainians.
Naturalization (Standard procedure)
This path is suitable for those who plan to live, work, or run a business in the country long-term.
To obtain a Slovak passport through naturalization, you must continuously reside in the country with the status of Permanent Residence (PMP) for at least 8 years.
The procedure requires confirmation of a legal source of income, no criminal record, and successful completion of an exam on knowledge of the Slovak language and the country’s realities.
Ethnic origin (Roots)
This is one of the fastest and most advantageous ways. If your ancestors (up to the third generation — parents, grandparents, great-grandparents) were Slovak by nationality or lived on the territory of Czechoslovakia, you have the right to first obtain the status of “Slovak living abroad” (Slovák žijúci v zahraničí).
This status allows you to obtain PMP, and after 3 years of continuous residence in the country, you can apply for a Slovak passport.
Marriage to a Slovak citizen
Obtaining citizenship through marriage is a common practice. However, sham marriages are strictly punished.
To apply for citizenship, a foreigner must be legally married to a Slovak citizen and live with them in the country for at least 5 years.
Special merits (Investments, sports, science)
Citizenship may be granted under an expedited procedure to individuals who have made a significant contribution to the economy, science, culture, or sports of Slovakia.
Although there is no classic “citizenship by investment” program in Slovakia, large-scale investment projects or the opening of a major business with job creation can be a compelling reason for an individual decision by the Ministry of the Interior.
The procedure for obtaining Slovak citizenship: Step by step
The process of acquiring European indigenat (citizenship) is a complex bureaucratic mechanism that requires meticulousness.
Assistance in obtaining Slovak citizenship from a qualified lawyer helps to avoid critical mistakes.
- Initial consultation and document audit: The migration lawyer analyzes your situation, ancestry, and current status to choose the optimal legal ground.
- Legalization and obtaining Permanent Residence (PMP): Moving from a temporary residence permit to permanent residence (Trvalý pobyt).
- Collection of evidence and formation of the dossier: Translation, apostille, and notarization of criminal record certificates, birth certificates, marriage certificates, bank account statements, confirmation of tax payments, and insurance.
- Taking exams: Preparation and passing of an interview, testing of Slovak language proficiency (level B1-B2), and knowledge of the country’s history and geography (if required by your legal ground).
- Submitting the application: Documents are submitted in person to the District Office (Okresný úrad) at the place of residence in Slovakia.
- Waiting and taking the oath: The review of the case by the Ministry of the Interior takes up to 24 months. In case of a positive decision, you receive an invitation to take the oath, after which you are handed a certificate of citizenship.
How much does it cost to obtain Slovak citizenship?
The commercial query “Slovak citizenship cost” is one of the most popular. The cost of processing is calculated individually.
It depends on the chosen legal ground, the number of family members, the state of your primary documents (the need to search for roots in archives), and the volume of legal services.
Official state fees are from 700 euros for the review of an adult’s application (may vary).
However, the lion’s share of the expenses is professional “turnkey” legal support, which guarantees the correctness of the dossier and protects you from refusal, which can close the path to the EU for years.
