Interpol international search

A significant part of the cases on the practical activities of lawyers in the field of criminal law is related to the cases of persons put on the international wanted list by Interpol. The lawyers of PRIKHODKO & PARTNERS have many years of experience necessary to solve problems related to the search, arrest, and prosecution of suspects.

What is Interpol?

Interpol is an international organization that specializes in the search for a specific person, object and contributes to the search for police authorities. The year of foundation is 1923, the current name – International Criminal Police Commission has been used since 1956. Today, the organization includes 190 countries of the world.

Interpol employees do not have direct police functions. That is, they cannot arrest, use service weapons, etc. in the territory of any countries that are members of the organization. The main function of Interpol is the coordination of forces, assistance to law enforcement officers from different countries. For example, Interpol staff can explain the specifics of national legislation, justice, etc.

What to do if Interpol is looking for you?

Let’s start with the fact that Interpol does not independently investigate criminal offenses. To report information about the search for a person, the Interpol File Control Commission functions. A person suspected of committing an international crime may apply to the representatives of the above-mentioned Commission to provide information on the presence/absence of additional information.

If violations are found in relation to the suspect, you can contact the representatives of the Commission with a request to correct / delete information about him. Of course, in this case, you need to provide evidence of such violations. It is very difficult to do this without the help of professional lawyers. Therefore, this matter should be entrusted to the specialists of PRIKHODKO & PARTNERS. All you need to do is book a consultation.

How to check if a person is wanted by Interpol?

Lawyers check the presence / absence of an international wanted list for each specific person based on one of three ways:

  • Verification of information on the official website of Interpol.

This method is not always reliable. This is due to the fact that not all data is published on the site. In some cases, information about a person put on the international wanted list is available exclusively in the Interpol internal database.

  • Search for information in national law enforcement agencies.

We are talking about the Department of International Police Cooperation of the National Police of Ukraine. However, this method also has some nuances. National police authorities do not have full access to INTERPOL files.

  • Request to the Interpol File Control Commission.

This method is the most reliable. If the Commission considers the request appropriate, a response could be received within a few months.

The procedure for declaring a person on the international wanted list by Interpol

Declaring a person on the international wanted list of Interpol provides for the following procedure:

  1. Application of the investigator or prosecutor to the Department of International Police Cooperation of the National Police.

There is a request for the publication of a “blue card”, which allows you to establish the real location of the individual.

  1. Study of the received request by the Department.
  2. Sending a request to the General Secretariat of Interpol (France).
  3. Consideration of the request by the General Secretariat for the publication of maps (they are temporarily recorded in the Interpol database).
  4. Receiving a message about an announcement on the international wanted list.

Publishing a map is a notification. This is not only an international search tool, but a way to exchange information. Most maps are not shared.

After following the above procedure, the person receives the status of a suspect in criminal proceedings.

How to withdraw from the Interpol wanted list?

You can withdraw from the Interpol wanted list only upon an official request to the Interpol File Control Commission.

How to remove a person from the international wanted list by Interpol?

The basis for deleting information about a person is a request to Interpol representatives. After he is satisfied, the information is subject to deletion. Confirmation of this is the corresponding written confirmation.

Who can be put on the international wanted list?

Persons who have committed crimes in one of the countries participating in the agreement on the functioning of Interpol can apply for an international wanted list.

Why can Interpol be declared an international wanted list?

The international wanted list of Interpol, that is, obtaining a red card is possible in the following cases:

  • A crime committed by a person is recognized as serious and recognized as a criminal offense in most countries.
  • The need to bring to justice evading penalties and / or serve a sentence.

Interpol’s requests meet the goals of the organization’s activities, namely, international cooperation, and not the conduct of unlawful persecution of a person.
