Immigration to France
The French Republic remains one of the most attractive countries in Europe for relocation, doing business, employment, and education.
A high standard of living, a stable economy, a developed social protection system, and the possibility of visa-free movement within the Schengen area encourage thousands of foreigners to seek legal ways to move.
However, French migration law is quite strict and multi-layered.
To successfully go through the legalization procedure, it is necessary to clearly understand the current requirements, correctly identify the grounds for processing documents, and comply with all legal nuances.

Main Grounds for Obtaining a Residence Permit
French law provides for several key immigration programs and statuses that allow foreigners to stay legally in the country for a long time.
Depending on the purpose of your move, the following main grounds for processing a residence permit (titre de séjour) are highlighted:
- Economic Immigration and Business (Talent Passport): The “Talent Passport” program is created for investors, startup founders, highly qualified specialists, and company managers. It gives the right to obtain a residence permit immediately for 4 years with the possibility of extension and a simplified procedure for family reunification.
- Employment (Salarié): Obtaining a work visa is possible provided there is an official labor contract with a French employer who can prove to local authorities (DIRECCTE) that there are no candidates for this vacancy among citizens of France or the EU.
- Financially Independent Persons (Visiteur): This status is suitable for individuals who have a stable passive income outside of France (dividends, rental income, remote work) and undertake not to carry out any professional activity on the territory of the republic.
- Education in Higher Educational Institutions (Étudiant): A student residence permit is issued on the basis of enrollment in a French university or language school. This status allows working a limited number of hours per week.
- Family Circumstances and Family Reunification: Marriage to a French citizen or moving to close relatives who already have legal status in the country.
Main Requirements for Applicants and Stages of Processing a Residence Permit
For successful completion of migration procedures, each applicant must meet basic criteria that are carefully checked by consular services and prefectures.
- Financial Solvency: Availability of sufficient funds for living in the country. Usually, the benchmark is the level of the minimum wage in France (SMIC). For financially independent individuals, the amount in accounts must significantly exceed this threshold.
- Legality of Origin of Funds: Provision of official tax declarations, bank account statements, contracts for the purchase and sale of property, or other documents confirming the legality of the capital.
- Availability of Housing: An official long-term lease agreement or a certificate of ownership of real estate in France.
- Absence of Criminal Records and Threat to Public Order: Provision of certificates of good conduct from countries of previous residence.
- Medical Insurance: Availability of a policy that covers all possible treatment costs throughout the entire period of stay.
The registration procedure consists of two main stages. First, documents for obtaining a long-term national type D visa are submitted in the country of origin.
After arriving in France, the foreigner must register the visa with the Office of Immigration and Integration (OFII) or contact the local prefecture at the place of residence to obtain a plastic titre de séjour card.
Naturalization: how to Obtain French Citizenship
Obtaining a French passport is the final stage of a long integration process. There are several ways to acquire citizenship, the most common being naturalization by length of residence and marriage.
In naturalization, the standard period of continuous legal residence in the country (settlement census) is 5 years.
This period can be reduced to 2 years for foreigners who have successfully graduated from a French higher educational institution and obtained a master’s degree. In the case of marriage to a French citizen, the right to apply arises after 4 years of cohabitation.
The main criteria for successful naturalization are:
- Confirmed knowledge of the French language at a level not lower than B1 (TCF or DELF certificate).
- Successful integration into French society, knowledge of history, culture, rights, and duties of a citizen.
- Availability of a stable and legal income on the territory of France, regular payment of taxes throughout the entire period of residence.
How the Help of a Migration Lawyer is Useful
Self-immigration is often accompanied by the risk of receiving a refusal due to incorrectly completed forms, lack of necessary certificates, or discrepancy of the chosen program with the actual criteria of the applicant. Refusal of a visa or residence permit significantly complicates further attempts at legalization in the EU.

Are you interested in obtaining temporary protection in France?
3 question
Do you want to obtain French citizenship?
Is it possible to obtain a residence permit in France when buying a home or commercial real estate?
The purchase of real estate of any value by itself is not an automatic ground for issuing a residence permit in France.
However, owning your own home is a significant plus when applying for financially independent status (Visiteur) or under the “Talent Passport” program, as it covers the mandatory requirement for a place of residence in the country.
Is it mandatory to know the French language to obtain an initial residence permit?
For most categories of temporary residence permits (for example, “Talent Passport”, “Visitor”, or student residence permit on English-language programs), strict knowledge of the language at the initial stage is not required.
However, knowledge of the language will become mandatory upon extension of certain types of residence permits, obtaining long-term residency (PMZH) after 5 years, and is also a key condition for naturalization and acquisition of citizenship (level B1).
Do members of an immigrant's family have the right to move with them and work?
This depends on the type of visa. If the main applicant processes a residence permit of the “Talent Passport” category (Talent Passport), the spouse and minor children receive status automatically under a simplified family support procedure.
At the same time, the spouse receives the full right to official employment in France. If a “Visitor” status is processed, family members can also move, but without the right to conduct professional activity within the country.
