What is a barcode?

A barcode, represented by rows of strokes and spaces, is a visual way of presenting information. Encoded data can be instantly read using special devices such as scanners. The scanner then converts strokes and spaces into numbers and letters that can be used to automatically find related information or perform specific actions.

Why do you need a barcode?

The primary purpose of a barcode on a product is to contain a unique identifier, such as a Global Product Item Number (GTIN), also known as an EAN or UPC. With a GS1 barcode number, you can link any information about a product, allowing the same barcode to be used for different actions during the ordering, production, delivery and sale of a product. End consumers can access product information through mobile apps, and the GS1 barcode standard is recognized worldwide.

Retail chains expect each retail item to have a unique GS1 barcode. In most cases, these barcodes are also required on group packaging of goods supplied to retail trade, as well as on goods presented on electronic trading platforms.

What are the types of barcodes?

For barcode type on consumer products sold at retail in stores or online, the EAN-13 barcode is recommended. The GTIN-13 number is used for goods whose quantity in the package has become fixed. In cases where the weight of each product unit is different (for example, sausage cuts), special GS1 numbers containing the identification number and the weight of the product unit (VMN-13 numbers) are used. Bar codes on goods of the “weight” category can be used only within one country.

To obtain a barcode, you must contact the national GS1 organization in your country, enter into an agreement, pay an annual fee and apply for an identifier for your product.

The receiving process consists of the following steps:

  • concluding a contract with the association;
  • payment of annual fees for registration;
  • drawing up and submitting an application for obtaining a barcode.

Applications for obtaining barcodes must be filled out as accurately as possible, since changing any data on the certificate to your barcode requires additional payment of fees.
