Visa to Poland
Poland is one of the countries of the European Union that requires a visa for legal and long-term stay on its territory. Visas to Poland are of different types depending on the purpose and duration of stay. Accordingly, the criteria for obtaining each type of visa are different.
Types of visas

- Type A – transit. This visa is required to transit through the international zone of an airport located in the Schengen area.
- Type C – Schengen visa. This type of visa allows you to stay in Poland officially for half a year, i.e. 180 days.
- Type D – national. This type of visa is required for those who intend to stay in Poland for more than 180 days. It is issued for a maximum period of 1 year. This type of visa is the most common, as it can be used both for education and work in Poland, as well as for the purpose of obtaining permanent residence in this country.
Visa requirements
Visa requirements depend primarily on the type of visa required and the purpose of the stay. However, there are also general requirements, which include:
- Printed and signed visa application form. The application form must be correctly filled out, the data must correspond to the data contained in the passport and documents confirming the purpose of obtaining a visa.
- A current color photograph measuring 3.5 x 4.5 cm. It is worth noting that the photo must be current at the time of application. You cannot use a photograph that has already been submitted for any type of visa. Submission of an outdated photograph may result in refusal to obtain a visa.
- A valid passport
- Documents confirming the purpose of obtaining a visa. If it is education, then there must be documents confirming studies at a Polish university. If a visa is required for employment, the so-called work visa, then an invitation from the employer to employ such a person in Poland must be attached. Regarding obtaining a work visa, it is worth noting that the invitation from the employer must be valid, and its validity period cannot be shorter than the period for which the person requests to open a visa in the visa application form.
- Documents confirming health insurance. A health insurance policy valid in all Schengen countries (for a Schengen visa) or in Poland (for a national visa).
- Receipt for payment of the consular fee.
The process of obtaining a work visa can take some time, so it is recommended to start it in advance. You should also carefully check the current requirements and the list of required documents on the official website of the Polish consular institution.
Reasons for refusal
The reasons for refusal to obtain a visa of any type may be different. Starting from incorrectly filling out the application form and ending with discrepancies in the documents confirming the purpose of obtaining a visa. There are also other less common reasons, such as the presence of a ban on entry to Poland or other Schengen countries, problems with documents confirming family ties (for a family reunification visa), etc.
Visa to Poland for Ukrainians
It is worth noting that for Ukrainians a visa-free regime is valid for 90 days within 180 days, but if there is a need for a longer period of stay, then you will still have to get a visa. For example, if you work under a contract for 4 months, then you will have to apply for a visa, since having extended the period of legal stay in the country, in the future there may be problems when crossing the border and even a ban on entry to Poland for a certain period of time.
The procedure for submitting documents for a national visa for citizens of Ukraine is general, but there are some features related to the current status and a large number of applications. It is recommended to closely monitor the information on the official websites of the Polish consular offices in Ukraine and visa centers, as conditions and procedures may change.
Key points for Ukrainians applying for a work visa:
- You must have a work permit from a Polish employer.
- Documents should be submitted to the appropriate consular district at the place of registration.
- Long processing times are possible due to the high workload of consular offices.
- It is important to provide a complete and correct package of documents to avoid refusals.
