Work permit in Germany
What categories of work permits are provided?
- General work permit.
- Job seeker visa in Germany. The duration of its is 6 months.
- Blue card;
- Work permit for freelancers;
It is worth noting that a work permit is required only for persons who do not have German citizenship, EU citizenship or citizenship of other countries for which a simplified employment procedure is provided (Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, countries of the European Economic Area (EEA) and some others).
Conditions for obtaining a work permit
- Job offer from an employer (except for a job seeker visa in Germany);
- Employment of a foreigner will not have a negative impact on the German labor market;
- There are no desired applicants for employment, such as German citizens, citizens of other EU;
- Working conditions for foreign workers are the same as for German citizens (same salary level, number of working days and rest days).
How to get a work permit in Germany?
- Receive a job offer in Germany.
- Collect and submit a package of necessary documents.
- Make an appointment for a visa interview.
- Pay the fee for a work visa to Germany.
- Attend an interview.
- Wait for a response to the visa application.
To obtain a work permit, the following documents must be submitted:
- Two visa application forms (to be filled out in German or English).
- Foreign passport (original and 2 copies). The passport must be valid for at least 3 months after the visa expires.
- Identical passport-size photographs (45×35 mm, frontal photograph, without headgear) taken within the last 6 months.
- A signed employment contract (contract) or employment agreement (original and 2 copies).
- Application for employment relations (original and 2 copies), filled out and signed by the employer.
- Documents confirming qualification (original and 2 copies of documents with translation). These can be diplomas (with attachments), certificates, work book. Diplomas issued in English do not need to be translated into German.
- License to carry out professional activities (if necessary) (original and 2 copies), (for example, medicine, engineering).
- A document confirming adequate pension provision (original and 2 copies) for persons who have reached the age of 45 and whose annual salary will be less than 46,860 euros (before taxes).
- Medical insurance policy (original and 2 copies), if the employment contract (contract) does not specify that the employer bears these costs.
- Certificate confirming the necessity of the applicant’s mandatory presence in Germany (2 copies), issued by the employer.
For a job seeker visa you should use motivation letter instead of employment agreement.
Who is entitled to receive a Blue Card and what are its benefits?

- citizenship of a country outside the EU and EEA;
- having a higher education, teaching experience or some other special skills;
- income of at least 52,000 euros per year (for employees in the field of IT, medicine, mathematics, engineering, threshold limit is about 40,000 euros).
Benefits of Blue Card holders:
- simplified procedure for obtaining a residence permit for family members (husband/wife and children);
- the right to visit EU countries as a tourist;
- the right to stay outside the EU for a year (for holders of a residence permit, this period is 180 days);
- the right to work in any EU country after one and a half years of employment in the first country.
