Residence permit in Poland for self-employed persons
Our company provides full support to entrepreneurs in registering a Sole Proprietorship (jednoosobowa działalność gospodarcza) and subsequently obtaining a residence permit in Poland.
This is a reliable way to legally stay in the country and develop your own business.
We help prepare documents, choose optimal business parameters, and go through all stages, minimizing the risks of errors and refusals.

Poland offers entrepreneurs convenient legalization mechanisms, similar to programs in other countries (digital nomad in the EU, etc.). Among them in Poland are the registration of a Sole Proprietorship, the creation of a partnership, or cooperation with a business incubator.
Thanks to this, obtaining a residence permit in Poland becomes accessible to those who plan to conduct stable activities and comply with legislative requirements.
What are the requirements for an entrepreneur to obtain a residence permit?
To obtain a temporary residence permit in Poland based on conducting a Sole Proprietorship, the applicant must prove the reality and profitability of the business.
The main requirement is confirmation that during the next year, the activity will allow reaching an income of no less than 12 times the average monthly salary in the economy (usually over 110,000 PLN per year).
For this, we prepare an extended package of documents, namely:
- A business plan with a clear description of the activity, target market, development strategy, and projected income.
- Contracts, preliminary agreements, or letters of intent from clients confirming orders and potential receipts.
- Accounting and bank documents (statements, invoices) demonstrating the current state of affairs and financial capability.
Proper preparation of these documents and information allows the Voivodeship Administrations to assess whether the Sole Proprietorship will indeed ensure stable stay and a contribution to the Polish economy.
The process of obtaining a residence permit for a Sole Proprietorship
Initially, preparatory work is carried out for the purpose of registering the Sole Proprietorship, namely: obtaining PESEL. Creation of Profil Zaufany, selection of correct PKD codes, choice of the most profitable form of taxation, direct registration of the Sole Proprietorship, and opening of a corporate bank account.
After this, a complete package of documents for submission is formed.
Further, the process of obtaining a residence permit looks like this:
- First, we schedule an appointment for personal submission at the Urząd (office) — waiting for the date can take about 6 months, depending on the Voivodeship and the workload.
- During the waiting period, we prepare all necessary documents, including the business plan, financial confirmations, and translations.
- On the appointed day, the applicant, with our support, submits the application personally, provides fingerprints, and undergoes a short interview.
- After submission, a decision is usually made within 4 months, although in some Voivodeships, it takes longer.
After a positive decision, a plastic karta pobytu (residence card) is issued. Overall, from the moment of submitting the documents to receiving the card, approximately 7–10 months pass, depending on the region and the completeness of the package.
Advantages of obtaining a residence permit through a Sole Proprietorship
Registration of a Sole Proprietorship and subsequent receipt of a residence permit in Poland gives entrepreneurs a number of opportunities:
- a stable legal basis for conducting business without restrictions on the duration of stay;
- access to banking services at the resident level;
- simplified drafting of contracts with counterparties and the possibility to scale the activity;
- furthermore, after a certain period, based on this type of residence permit, one can apply for a permanent residence permit in Poland, and subsequently for EU citizenship.
Poland remains an attractive jurisdiction for entrepreneurs due to the relatively transparent procedure for registering and running a Sole Proprietorship, flexible tax regimes, and access to the EU market.
In the absence of the possibility to meet the required parameters for a Sole Proprietorship, our lawyers are ready to offer alternative options that could potentially reduce the tax burden and also facilitate the process of maintaining the validity of your residence permit.
