If you plan to stay for a short period of time, but you want to have legal grounds for your stay, as well as medical care and insurance, then a temporary residence permit is suitable for you. Having received a document certifying a legal stay on the territory of Switzerland, a foreigner has the same rights as citizens of this country. If a foreign citizen plans to stay in Switzerland for more than 3 months, he is required to issue a temporary residence permit. After arriving on the territory of Switzerland, a foreigner has 2 weeks to submit documents for issuing a passport and registration at the place of residence.

In accordance with such permits, there are the following grounds for obtaining a temporary stay permit:

EMPLOYMENT ON THE TERRITORY OF SWITZERLAND

Citizens of third countries can obtain a residence permit on the basis of employment if they have appropriate qualifications, a diploma of higher education and work experience in this field. They should be better than Swiss and EU citizens in these areas, and also have housing and insurance.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP

If a temporary residence permit must be obtained through entrepreneurial activity, then there are also certain requirements – creation of workplaces for Swiss citizens, confirmation of business innovation, submission of a business plan and evidence of the relevance of such activity for the canton or the whole of Switzerland. Also, there must be evidence of the integrity of the owner.

INVESTMENT

This residence permit is intended for investors and/or business owners in Switzerland who must invest at least one million Swiss francs (CHF) in a Swiss company.

The permit is issued for 2 years, with the right of extension. After 10 years of continuous residence in Switzerland, foreigners receive permanent residency, and after 12 years, the applicant can obtain Swiss citizenship.

RESIDENCE WITHOUT THE RIGHT TO WORK

Two categories of persons:

  • Up to 55 years of age – lack of work, availability of a sufficient level of financial support, availability of a close connection with Switzerland
  • After 55 years – the prevailing interest for the canton is important. This is usually equal to an estimated annual income of between 400,000 and 1,000,000 Swiss francs, from which the tax liability will be calculated, and which depends on a number of factors, including the specific canton in which the person lives.

FAMILY REUNIFICATION

The following are entitled to family reunification in Switzerland:

  • foreigners who married a Swiss citizen;
  • minor children and spouses of foreigners who have issued a residence permit in Switzerland.
  • Spouses and minor children receive a residence permit Permit B. After 5 years of cohabitation, they can apply for a permanent residence permit, and subsequently for Swiss citizenship.

PAYMENT OF INCOME TAX

  • Single taxation is a special status available to non-Swiss residents without the possibility of gainful employment in Switzerland.
  • A foreigner pays a fixed tax regardless of income.
  • Each canton sets its own tax rates, depending on the standard of living and economic development of the region.

For what period is a temporary residence permit issued in Switzerland?

Dependencies on the basis of stay.

In some cantons, the payment agreement is concluded for a period of five years with the possibility of obtaining a permanent residence permit in Switzerland, in others it is renewed every year. After obtaining a permanent residence, the contract tax must still be paid.
