A residence permit in Spain is a document that certifies the identity of a foreigner and confirms permission to stay continuously in the country.
Validity of temporary residence permit?
A temporary residence permit (PDR) in Spain, depending on the purpose, can be issued for a period of 3 months to 5 years with the possibility of an extension.
Who can issue?
People who plan to stay continuously in Spain for more than 90 days, but for less than 5 years, can apply.
Importantly! The holder of a temporary residence permit must inform the migration service about a change in marital status, place of residence, place of work, and other information.
Types of temporary residence permits:
According to clause 2. Art. 45 of Royal Decree № 557/2011 There are 9 types of temporary residence permits:
- Non-profit temporary residence permit.
- Temporary residence permit for family reunification.
- Temporary residence and work permit.
- Temporary residence and work permit for research and study.
- Temporary residence and work permit for highly qualified specialists who have an EU Blue Card.
- Permit for temporary residence and work for a certain period.
- Permit for temporary residence and self-employment.
- Permit for temporary residence and work within the framework of transnational provision of services.
- Temporary residence permit, with the exception of a work permit.
Registration procedure:
- Prepare the necessary package of documents
- Translate into Spanish and notarize with an apostille.
- Submit documents to the Spanish embassy in your country.
Temporary residence permit without the right to work
Provides an opportunity to live in Spain, but not engage in work. A mandatory condition for a foreigner is proof that he has funds for living. People who have the finances to live in Spain, foreign citizens who have invested in real estate worth more than 500,000 euros, and pensioners who will receive a payment in their homeland, whose level corresponds to the declared one, can receive it.
Procedure:
- Get a D visa to come to Spain
- Obtain resident status within 1 month of arrival in Spain.
Importantly! Obtaining this permit does not exclude the possibility of remote employment or conducting business outside the Spanish territory.
Temporary residence permit for family reunification
If you have relatives who legally live in Spain on the basis of a residence permit, permanent residence, citizenship, or whose parents are of Spanish origin, you can use the “family reunification” program. This program applies to children and pensioners. The minimum amount of income per family member should be around 2,500 euros.
Required documents for submission:
- statement;
- foreigner’s card;
- income statement;
- availability of documentary evidence of living space for family living.
2. Permit for temporary residence and work
If you plan to go to work in Spain by concluding an employment contract with a Spanish company, you can obtain a residence permit with the right to work and reside. At the same time, the employer must confirm that it is difficult to find a specialist in the domestic market.
The procedure for obtaining a permit:
- Sign a contract with the employer.
- Issue a work permit and obtain a work visa.
- Confirm the employer’s solvency with tax returns.

4. Temporary residence permit for highly qualified workers holding an EU blue card
The procedure for obtaining a permit for highly qualified workers:

- submit a complete package of documents in Spain
- get residence cards in Spain.
