There are temporary and permanent residence permits in Slovakia. Let’s start with information about a temporary residence permit. If you have decided to settle in Slovakia on a temporary basis, your first step will be to decide on the basis on which you will apply for a permit. The second step will be the preparation of documents and filling out the application for issuing a passport. The application must be made on an official form, which can be obtained from the diplomatic office of Slovakia in your country, or from the Migration Police of Slovakia at your place of residence (if you are already in the country on legal grounds).

  • Certain types of activities, such as lecturing, sports, cultural, internship, etc.

Business in Slovakia

A residence permit for the purpose of entrepreneurial activity can be obtained by a foreign citizen who is or will be engaged in entrepreneurial activity as an individual entrepreneur (IP), or acts or will act on behalf of a company (LLC). It is important to note that only the director, not the owner, has the right to obtain a permit.

There is a distinction between permits for entrepreneurial activity with a trade license and a residence permit in Slovakia as an executive director of one’s own company. This document is issued for 3 years and can be renewed.

Work in Slovakia

intended for high-class specialists and if you want to go to seasonal jobs or work several months a year in such fields as:

  • Agriculture, forestry and fisheries;
  • Industrial production;
  • Construction;
  • Accommodation and catering services,

then you will need a seasonal work permit.

Seasonal work is an activity that does not exceed 180 days during 12 consecutive months in a certain period of the year, during which the volume of work in a specific sector increases significantly. It can be issued for up to 90 days, and for a period of more than 90 days.

Studying in Slovakia

The following can apply for it:

  • high school students,
  • students of full-time technical schools and universities
  • persons who attend language or professional training courses before admission.

A decision on a residence permit for the purpose of study is made by the police for foreigners within 30 days, and a national visa is issued by the Slovak consulate, also within a 30-day period. Issued for up to 6 years.

Family reunion

is the safest way to obtain a temporary residence permit in Slovakia.

You are eligible for this type of permit if you are:

  • A family member of a person who has a permanent or temporary residence permit in Slovakia;
  • A minor relative of a refugee;
  • Dependent person in accordance with the international agreement.

Issued for up to 5 years.

Special activity

This certificate is issued for 2 years.

Intended for – athletes, people of creative professions, lecturers, interns, peacekeepers, volunteers, accredited journalists, etc. With this certificate, it is allowed to study, but not to do business. Also, this status can be renewed again, but for no more than 3 years.

Temporary permit for research and development

This residence permit for a period of up to 2 years is granted to researchers and developers who go to Slovakia under the agreement on the invitation of specialists. Owners of this status, unlike the category above, can not only study, but also engage in business. Also, they can engage in teaching activities for a certain number of days a year. This certificate can be renewed a second time for up to 3 years.

EU Blue Card

A blue card is a type of temporary permit issued to citizens of third countries for the purpose of highly qualified employment. The main condition for obtaining it is the presence of a higher education, a salary that exceeds at least one and a half times the local salary in the relevant field, and an employment contract for at least 1 year.

The blue card is opened for 4 years or for the duration of the contract. It is possible to renew it for another 4 years.

Marriage with a citizen of Slovakia

One of the ways to get a residence permit is to get married. It is issued for a period of 12 months. Then it is submitted for a two-year term.

Temporary permit for a Slovak living abroad.

This residence permit applies to ethnic Slovaks, children from mixed marriages, Slovaks with permanent or temporary residence permits in other European countries who have decided to return to their homeland. The permit is issued for 5 years.

Benefits:

  • Applicants for this status may stay in Slovakia until a decision is made on their application
  • exempt from many fees and documents such as a criminal record or health insurance.

Having a long-term residence permit in another EC country

This type of permit is issued for a period of up to 5 years to foreigners³ who have the necessary permit in any other EU country on the basis of:

  • entrepreneurial activity in Slovakia,
  • employment in the SR,
  • study in Slovakia,
  • engaging in scientific research, development or special activities (lecturing, art, volunteering, sports), etc.

Documents for applying for a residence permit in Slovakia

  • completed application
  • two color photos (3 x 3.5 cm);
  • a receipt for the payment of the administrative fee (the cost depends on the purpose of residence and the place of submission);
  • valid foreign passport;
  • a document confirming the purpose of stay;
  • a certificate of no criminal record;
  • a document on the availability of housing;
  • confirmation of financial security.
