OBTAIN HUNGARIAN CITIZENSHIP

Citizenship is a rather important connection between a person and the state, in this case it is a two-way connection, because both parties acquire both rights and obligations.

Although obtaining Hungarian citizenship is not so easy, upon obtaining it, a person receives quite a lot of benefits from having a citizen’s passport.

According to the legislation of Hungary, it is possible to become a citizen of Hungary under the following conditions:

– By birth

– By origin

– Naturalization

OBTAIN CITIZENSHIP BY BIRTH

A person acquires Hungarian citizenship at birth if at least one of the parents is a Hungarian citizen. Place of birth does not matter.

Children born in Hungary to foreign parents do not acquire Hungarian citizenship at birth, unless they are stateless.

Minor children adopted by Hungarian citizens can apply and will usually have Hungarian citizenship.

OBTAIN CITIZENSHIP BY ORIGIN

Ethnic Hungarians who were born or lived in territories that were separated from Hungary as a result of wars have the right to acquire Hungarian citizenship in a simplified form.

If you or your relatives lived or were born on the territory of Southern Slovakia, Transylvania, Vojvodina or the current Zakarpattia region of Ukraine before 1920 or from 1938 to 1945, you can obtain Hungarian citizenship by repatriation.

OBTAIN CITIZENSHIP BY NATURALIZATION

Individuals may apply for naturalization as a Hungarian citizen after 8 years of continuous residence in Hungary if they:

• do not have a criminal past at all,
• have a stable life,
• have a good character and
• will pass a test on basic constitutional studies.

Individuals can apply for naturalization after 5 years of residence in Hungary if they:

• were born in Hungary, or
• lived in Hungary until the age of 18, or
• is a stateless person.

Individuals can apply for naturalization after 3 years of residence in Hungary if they:

• husband or wife of a Hungarian citizen and who have been married for three years (or widow/widower),
• parents of minor children of Hungarian citizens,
• adopted/adopted by Hungarian citizens, or
• recognized refugees.

Individuals may apply for naturalization if they:

• husband or wife of a Hungarian citizen who has been married for at least ten years, or
• spouse of a Hungarian citizen who has been married for at least five years and has a child together, and
• able to provide proof of mastery of the Hungarian language.

1. Is it necessary to apply for Hungarian citizenship in person?

Documents must be submitted in person to:

• Local self-government bodies (járási hivatal in Hungarian).
• Integrated customer service offices of county or metropolitan government institutions (integrált uyezhoszolgálati irodain in Hungarian).
• Consulate of Hungary (if you are abroad).
