What are the types of visas in Great Britain?
All UK visas can be divided into three broad categories, namely:
- Short-term UK visas are visas that can be valid from 24 hours to six months, including tourist visas, visitor visas and transit visas;
- Non-immigrant visas – long-term temporary visas for purposes such as study or work on a fixed-term temporary contract where
- the applicant does not intend to stay in the UK for longer than a specified period;
- Immigrant visas are for those who want to stay in the UK long-term or permanently, such as those moving for work or family reunification.
Short-term visas
- Standard Visitor visa
This visa allows you to travel to the United Kingdom for leisure, business, study or private purposes and stay for up to six months. You can extend this period up to 11 months if you are receiving private treatment, or up to 12 months if you are doing scientific research.
- Short-term study visa
This visa is intended for short-term language courses lasting from 6 to 11 months. You can apply if you are over 16 and studying an English course. You will need to provide proof that you have been accepted to study in the UK and that you can support yourself financially.
- Marriage guest visa
You can apply for this visa if you want to get married or register a civil partnership in the UK, as long as you don’t plan to stay in the country. The validity period of such a visa is no more than 6 months. You will need to provide:
- Confirmation that you can financially support yourself during your stay;
- Confirmation of marriage plans in the UK, such as confirmation of venue bookings;
- Accommodation plans during your stay.
- Visa for work. This is a UK visa that you can get if you:
- Invited to the UK by an organization or client based in that country
- Want to do short-term paid work in the UK but haven’t been sponsored on the points system
The visa is valid for one month. You will need to provide proof that you can support yourself financially during your stay, as well as an invitation from a UK organisation.
- Student visa of the child’s parents
You can apply for this visa if you have a child between the ages of 4 and 11 who attends an independent fee-paying school in the UK. This visa is usually for 6 months, but can be extended to 12 months and then extended until your child is 12 years old. Your child must be under the age of 12 and have a child student visa.
- Transit visa of Great Britain
This visa allows you to transit through the UK if you are changing flights or traveling through the UK on your way to another country. There are two types of transit visas:
- Direct transit visa after departure – if you are changing your flight and do not go through UK border control. The duration of such a visa is 24 hours.
- Transit visitor visa – if you are passing through border control but going to another country. The duration of the visa is 48 hours.
Nonimmigrant visas
The second type of temporary residence permits are non-immigrant visas. Anyone wishing to stay in the UK for longer than six months will need to apply for a visa, except as described above.
Most UK non-immigrant visas are issued for between 1 and 5 years, with some being extendable if you want to stay longer. Below are the types of such visas:
- Work visas
You can find out more about the types of work visas on our website in the “Work permit in Great Britain” section.
- Study visa
In addition to the short-term study visa, there are two student visas available in the UK:
- General student visa
- Child student visa
These visas are available to anyone who has been offered a place to study at a recognized place of study in the UK. General student visas are granted for the duration of studies. Child student visas are available for children aged 4 to 17 years. They can last up to six years (or three years if the child is 16 or 17). Applicants for a general student visa must provide evidence that they meet the English language proficiency requirements. Child student visa applicants must provide evidence of their parents’ or guardians’ consent.
- Family visa
You can apply for a family visa in the UK if you want to come and live with:
- husband/wife
- bride/groom or civil partner
- child
- father
- a relative who provides you with long-term care
Family visas are valid for 2.5 years if you are applying as a partner/spouse or parent, but can be extended. If you are applying as a child or dependent relative, the visa may be longer. The exact duration will depend on your situation.
