What categories of work permits are provided?

  • General work permit.

It is worth noting that a work permit is required only for persons who do not have German citizenship, EU citizenship or citizenship of other countries for which a simplified employment procedure is provided (Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, countries of the European Economic Area (EEA) and some others).

Conditions for obtaining a work permit

  • Employment of a foreigner will not have a negative impact on the German labor market;
  • There are no desired applicants for employment, such as German citizens, citizens of other EU;
  • Working conditions for foreign workers are the same as for German citizens (same salary level, number of working days and rest days).

  • Receive a job offer in Germany.
  • Collect and submit a package of necessary documents.
  • Make an appointment for a visa interview.
  • Pay the fee for a work visa to Germany.

To obtain a work permit, the following documents must be submitted:

For a job seeker visa you should use motivation letter instead of employment agreement.

Who is entitled to receive a Blue Card and what are its benefits?

To facilitate access to the labor market for highly qualified persons from non-EU and EEA countries, the “EU Blue Card” has been available since summer 2012. This Blue Card simplifies obtaining a work permit for highly skilled individuals and their families. Requirements:

  • citizenship of a country outside the EU and EEA;
  • having a higher education, teaching experience or some other special skills;
  • income of at least 52,000 euros per year (for employees in the field of IT, medicine, mathematics, engineering, threshold limit is about 40,000 euros).

Benefits of Blue Card holders:

  • simplified procedure for obtaining a residence permit for family members (husband/wife and children);
  • the right to visit EU countries as a tourist;
  • the right to stay outside the EU for a year (for holders of a residence permit, this period is 180 days);
  • the right to work in any EU country after one and a half years of employment in the first country.

Is knowledge of the German language mandatory?

You can get a job in Germany without knowing the language, for example, for a position in the field of logistics or in a warehouse. However, most professions in Germany require a certain level of knowledge of the German language, usually B1, for doctors B2, for teachers C1. The supporting document is a language certificate from an ALTE-certified institution. If the level of knowledge of the German language is insufficient, it is necessary to take a language course.
