A residence permit in Austria can be obtained in various ways. Although the requirements and application process may vary depending on the type of permit you are applying for.
A third-country national that holds an Austrian Residence Permit has many benefits, which include:

According to Part 3 of Article 8 of the Federal Act on Settlement and Residence in Austria (NAG), the following types of residence permits are provided for:
- Residence permit “Red-White-Red – Card plus”, which entitles you to temporary settlement and to work as a self-employed and employed person;
- Residence permit “Blue Card EU”, which entitles you to temporary settlement and to pursuing gainful employment, for which a written notification has been issued;
- “Settlement permit”, which entitles you to temporary settlement and self-employment;
- “Settlement permit – except gainful employment”, which entitles you to settle for a limited period without pursuing gainful employment;
- “Settlement Permit – Dependent”, which entitles you to settle for a limited period without pursuing gainful employment; gainful employment is only permitted on the basis of a subsequent change of purpose that is subject to a quota;
- Residence permit “Family member” for temporary settlement with the possibility of subsequently obtaining a residence permit “Permanent residence – EU” (clause 7);
- Residence permit “Settlement Permit – Artist”, which entitles you to temporary settlement and to work as an employed person for which a written notification has been issued.
- Settlement permit – special cases of gainful employment (Niederlassungsbewilligung – Sonderfälle unselbständiger Erwerbstätigkeit) for temporary settlement and employment of persons not covered by the Law on the Employment of Foreigners.
- Residence permit “Settlement Permit – Researcher”, which entitles you to settle for a limited period of time and to work as an employee for a research institution;
- “Residence permit” for a temporary limited stay in federal territory for a specific purpose (internship, volunteering etc).
General conditions for obtaining a residence permit in Austria
- residence of a foreigner does not contradict public interests;
- the foreigner confirms the legal right to housing;
- the foreigner has health insurance in Austria;
- the stay of a foreigner could not lead to a financial burden for the local authorities;
- the relations of the Republic of Austria with another state or other subject of international law do not undergo a significant deterioration due to the issuance of a residence permit;
