Importantly! As a general rule, it is not possible to obtain a permanent residence permit, let alone citizenship, through investment. However, Article 10 of the Austrian Citizenship Act provides that the Austrian authorities, at their own discretion, may grant citizenship to a person for significant merits to the Austrian state, which in particular include the implementation of investment activities of a significant amount (€8-10 million), provided that such investments led to the creation of a large number of jobs and had a positive impact on the state’s economy. In this case, instead of the usual 10 years of legal stay on the territory of Austria, the investor will be able to obtain citizenship in 2-3 years.
