As part of the reform of eco-social taxation, on March 1, 2022, new rules for the taxation of cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, Ethereum & Co. came into force. In future, realized gains from digital assets will be subject to capital gains tax rather than a progressive income tax rate. This means that cryptocurrencies will currently have to be taxed as shares at a rate of 27.5%, regardless of the holding period. Thus, the exemption from paying taxes after the one-year storage period of cryptocurrencies is completely canceled.

At the same time, the following transactions are not considered current income, and therefore capital gains tax is not paid:

• if the transaction processing service mainly consists in the use of existing cryptocurrencies (Staking);
• if cryptocurrency is transferred for free (airdrops) or only for minor other services (bounties);
• when cryptocurrencies are received as part of a fork from the original blockchain (hard fork).

However, the cryptocurrencies received must be valued at zero acquisition cost, which means that the entire value of the cryptocurrencies is taxable upon subsequent sale.
