Informed voluntary consent – what is it?
If you have been treated or are planning to go to the hospital — listen carefully
There is such a document — informed voluntary consent.
They give it to you to sign before an examination, medical treatment, surgery, or anesthesia.
And you know what? Most people sign it — without reading it.
And this is really dangerous.
Because along with signing, you can automatically agree to:
- unwanted treatment methods,
- student participation in the procedure,
- anesthesia that has contraindications for you,
- or even blood transfusion — which no one will tell you separately.
Therefore, before signing — be sure to check:
- Is the institution indicated correctly.
- Is the diagnosis clear.
- What kind of treatment is offered.
- And what is written in the section about risks.
You have every right:
- to ask the doctor questions,
- to find out about alternatives,
- and to ask to explain medical terms.
A separate topic is surgery or anesthesia.
- Find out what type of anesthesia will be used.
- Who will perform it.
- And whether there is consent for blood transfusion.
And one more point - about students. Yes, this can be in the document. But if you do not agree - you have the right to demand that this item be excluded.
And finally. Never sign an informed consent:
- if it is not completely filled out,
- if there are empty fields,
- if the doctor did not explain anything,
- or you are under the influence of medication.
This is not a formality. This is your safety.
