In Ukraine, the disability system is divided into three groups, each of which has its own requirements and criteria for appointment. The third group of disabilities is one of the most common and includes individuals with health impairments that are not critical but significantly affect their ability to work and perform everyday tasks.

It is important to understand which diseases can fall under this category in order to correctly apply for the status of disabled persons of the third group.

The main criteria for obtaining the third group of disability

The main criteria for obtaining the third group of disability include chronic diseases of internal organs, such as gastritis or peptic ulcer disease in remission, chronic bronchitis or asthma, which require constant treatment, but do not significantly reduce work capacity, as well as cardiovascular diseases such as as a hypertensive disease of moderate severity without significant complications.

Neurological disorders can also be the basis for the designation of the third group of disabilities, in particular, a mild form of multiple sclerosis or neuralgia, which does not cause serious impairment of motor functions. Post-stroke conditions with limited functional impairment may also meet the criteria.

Orthopedic disorders, such as mild forms of arthritis or arthrosis, which do not significantly reduce independence and work capacity, as well as spine or limb deformities, which do not significantly limit the ability to perform daily tasks, can also be the basis for obtaining the third group of disability.

Endocrine diseases that can be the basis for the appointment of this group of disabilities include diabetes in the compensation stage, which requires regular monitoring and treatment, as well as hypothyroidism without serious complications, which does not significantly affect vitality.

Mental disorders such as mild forms of depression or anxiety disorders that are not critical and do not interfere with daily tasks may also meet the criteria. Schizophrenia in the stage of stable remission without pronounced mental disorders can also be the basis for assigning the third group of disability.

The procedure for obtaining the third group of disability

The process of obtaining the status of disabled person of the third group involves several stages:

  1. Medical examination. To confirm the disease and its severity, it is necessary to undergo an examination in medical institutions that have the appropriate accreditation.
  2. Medical and social examination. On the basis of medical conclusions, a medical and social examination (MSEK) is conducted, which assesses the degree of limitation of vital activity and work capacity.
  3. Collection of documents. Preparation of necessary documents, including medical certificates, doctors' opinions, examination results and application for disability.
  4. Application submission. Submission of all collected documents to the MSEK or the relevant body for registration of status.
  5. Obtaining a decision. After consideration of the application and all documents, a disability group is determined based on the decision of the MSEK.

Difficulties and obstacles are possible

Obtaining the status of a disabled person of the third group may be accompanied by certain difficulties. Including:

  • The need to correctly draw up medical documentation. Incorrectly executed documents may cause rejection. It is important that all medical certificates and conclusions are correctly filled out and meet the requirements of MSEK.
  • Difficulties with passing a medical and social examination. MSEK can refuse to assign a disability if there is not enough evidence to confirm the limitations. Violation of formalities or insufficient number of medical certificates can stand in the way.
  • Procedural issues. Unforeseen delays or errors may occur in the process of collecting and submitting documents. This may include errors in filling out forms, delays in obtaining medical reports or difficulties in gathering the necessary documentation.
  • Ignorance of current norms and rules. Legislation and requirements for medico-social expertise can change, making the process difficult for individuals who do not have relevant knowledge and experience in this area.
