Finding Polish roots: the path to Polish citizenship

  • Passport documents of the Republic of Poland of your relatives.
  • Other documents proving Polish ancestry (e.g. marriage, divorce, death certificates, military records, employment records, etc.)

  • Find out where to look for the documents (civil registry office or archive).

How to start searching for documents?

Gather information about your relatives: their names, dates of birth, places of birth, as well as years and places of residence. Determine what documents they might have that confirm their Polish origin.

Depending on the place where the documents were issued:

  • Duplicates of documents issued up to 75 years ago can be obtained at the Civil Registry Office.
  • Duplicates of documents issued more than 75 years ago or extracts from metric books can be obtained from archival institutions.
  • Other sources: family archives, records, photographs; historical and genealogical resources.
