Mobilization or contract: which is better?

Reading time: 3 min.

Active hostilities continue in Ukraine, as the Russian Federation does not abandon its original goals of occupying our country. Therefore, general mobilization continues in the country, which facilitates the recruitment of citizens aged 18 to 60 into the Armed Forces of Ukraine. However, the country also has a contractual form of military service. What is the difference between these two types of military service - this legal aspect will be discussed in this article.

What are the peculiarities of contract service?

First of all, the contractual form of military service involves citizens joining the Armed Forces on a voluntary basis. Both men and women aged 18 to 45 can sign a contract for a period of 1 to 10 years. In addition, women who are not registered with the military, if they wish to serve in the Armed Forces, can serve only under a contract.

The main advantages of the contract are that a person can choose the military unit where he or she will serve, as well as the appropriate specialty. To do this, they apply to the relevant military unit and coordinate their service with the future commander. In addition, contract soldiers have clear deadlines for military service for the period specified in the contract.

The main disadvantage of the contractual form of military service is that its execution takes a longer period of time than the conscription of citizens, as it requires a much larger amount of documentation.

What are the peculiarities of mobilization?

Conscription under general mobilization is the main method of manning the AFU during the period of martial law in the country. Accordingly, it is mobilized citizens who make up a significant proportion of military formations in the structure of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. In Ukraine, mobilization is only for men between the ages of 25 and 60 and is mandatory for citizens liable for military service. Citizens who were mobilized during martial law in the country are sent to the military unit that needs to be manned after completing training at the relevant center, and therefore they do not have the right to choose where they will serve.

One of the main advantages of mobilized servicemen is that they have more grounds for discharge from military service for family reasons (for example, the birth of a third child in the family).

The main disadvantage of being in the Armed Forces under mobilization is that the current legislation does not specify the timeframe for military service, only that it is either until the end of martial law in the country or the announcement of demobilization. Thus, martial law in the country can last for a long period of time and this creates a problem where mobilized persons cannot clearly understand when they will be demobilized.
