Military registration of women

The new law on mobilization to be adopted in May 2024 has significantly strengthened mobilization measures in Ukraine, as the fighting in the country continues and the aggressor, represented by the Russian Federation, does not abandon its original intentions to occupy our country. The strengthening of mobilization measures has also affected women liable for military service. What exactly has changed for this category of citizens and how women liable for military service can register for military service - these legal aspects will be discussed in this article.

What happened before the new law on mobilization?

In general, until mid-May 2024, women with medical and pharmaceutical education could be employed as non-conscripts until the end of 2026, meaning they did not have to register as Ukrainian citizens. However, this provision was canceled on May 16, 2024. In practice, this means that women who have received the appropriate education are liable for military service, and therefore they must register with the military authorities before they are employed. Thus, the government has created a legal mechanism for checking the availability of doctors in the country to further form the relevant reserves.

How do women liable for military service register for military service?

• If women liable for military service are studying (getting a medical or pharmaceutical degree). In this case, educational institutions must submit a list of such women liable for military service to local TCC and JV 60 days before graduation. On the basis of the submitted lists, employees of the TCC and JV have the right to issue women with a temporary certificate of a person liable for military service. However, the degree of fitness and the mark on military registration are not indicated in the issued certificate. After women have received the relevant certificates, they must come to the local TCC and JV on their own within 7 days to register for military service. In this case, the procedure for determining a citizen's eligibility, entering data into the relevant registers, and issuing military registration documents will take place.
• If women liable for military service are employed. In this case, the employer (enterprise, institution, organization) notifies the local TCC and JV about women who work at such enterprises and are not registered for military service. And then the employer creates all the necessary conditions for working women liable for military service to be registered with the TCC and JV.
• If women liable for military service are unemployed. In this case, they are obliged to come to local TCC and JV on their own to register for military service.

It is worth noting that in order to register for military service, women must provide the following package of documents, namely

1. A written application stating that the person wishes to be registered for military service;
2. A copy of the passport or ID card;
3. A COPY OF THE TAX REGISTRATION CERTIFICATE;
4. Document on education;
5. Document from the current place of work (required if the person is employed);
6. Birth and marriage certificates (if any);
7. 3x4 photos.

Important! If the employees of the TCC and the JV believe that a citizen is subject to military registration, he or she must first be sent for a military qualification examination to determine his or her fitness for military service in the Armed Forces of Ukraine. After checking the submitted package of documents and the conclusion of the military qualification commission, the person liable for military service receives a military registration document.
