MILITARY PENSIONS, HOW THEY ARE CALCULATED?

Factors determining military pensions

Military pensions are determined by a variety of factors, including length of service, rank earned, and retirement system used. The Law of Ukraine "On pension provision of persons discharged from military service and certain other persons" establishes the conditions, amounts and procedure of pension provision for military personnel. An important factor in the appointment of a military pension is the length of service. The longer a person serves in the army, the higher his pension will be. In addition, the amount of the pension may be affected by the rank received for years of service. Higher ranks usually receive a higher pension than lower ranks.

The retirement system used is another factor that determines military pensions. Ukraine has a pension system: a pension system for military personnel.

The pension system of military personnel is based on the principle of solidarity, which means that pensions are paid from the state budget and do not depend on the amount of individual contributions.

Recalculation of military pensions may occur due to changes in legislation or other factors. For example, in 2022, the Ukrainian government adopted a law that transferred pensions to persons discharged from military service and some other categories of persons. Recalculation can also take place when a person is re-enrolled in military service. In addition, individuals can submit applications for the appointment or recalculation of a pension, change the type of pension or make changes to the pension file. In general, military pensions are determined by a variety of factors, and it is important to understand these factors in order to ensure adequate retirement benefits.

How transfers are made to military personnel?

Recalculation of pensions of military personnel and persons subject to the Law of Ukraine № 2262-ХІI on pension status is carried out on the basis of the provisions of this Law. The amount of monetary support is calculated taking into account the official salary, military (special) rank, salary or supplement to the military (special) rank and increases depending on years of service. At the same time, interest or additional payments, monthly additional types of financial assistance (scholarships, additional payments, allowances) and premiums in the amounts established by law are taken into account.

Persons who have the right to recalculate pensions based on years of service in accordance with Law No. 2262-ХІ, include, but are not limited to, the following categories:

  • Private soldiers, non-commissioned officers, sergeants and officers (except military).
  • Commanders and rank-and-file officials of internal affairs bodies of Ukraine, police, tax police, special units of the Economic Security Service of Ukraine, State Penitentiary Service of Ukraine, rank-and-file employees, commanders and ranks of institutions and civil defense.
  • Servicemen of the Armed Forces of the former Soviet Union, other military organizations, state security and internal affairs bodies, the National Guard of Ukraine.
