How to get Polish citizenship?

Reading time: 4 min.

It's no secret that a lot of Ukrainians work and live in Poland. And some of them intend to stay in this country. One of the issues that concern them is obtaining Polish citizenship.

There are several ways to obtain Polish citizenship.

  • Originally:

You can get Polish citizenship if one of your ancestors (parents, grandparents) was Polish.
To do this, you will need to provide documents that prove your Polish origin, such as birth, marriage, death certificates, archival certificates or records from church books.

  • Through naturalization:

You can get Polish citizenship if you have legally lived in Poland for 3 years (or 5 years if you are married to a Polish citizen). To do this, you will need to pass an exam in the Polish language and the history of Poland, as well as confirm that you have a stable source of income and housing.

The list of documents you will need to obtain Polish citizenship may vary depending on the method you choose.

  • Originally:
  1. Birth Certificate: Yours and the ancestors you are referring to.
  2. Marriage/divorce certificate: of your ancestors, if one of your parents, or grandparents you refer to changed their last name.
  3. Documents confirming Polish origin: for example, records from church books, certificates from Polish authorities, or Polish-style identity cards of your ancestors.
  4. Proof of knowledge of the Polish language: for example, a diploma of finishing a Polish school or a certificate of passing a Polish language exam.

Through naturalization:

  1. valid passport: of your country of origin;
  2. beaten card: a Polish document confirming your legal stay in Poland;
  3. certificate of criminal record: from your country of origin and from Poland;
  4. health certificate;
  5. confirmation of knowledge of the Polish language: for example, a diploma of graduation from a Polish school or a certificate of passing an exam in the Polish language;
  6. confirmation of the source of income: for example, a certificate of salary or a statement from a bank account;
  7. confirmation of the availability of housing: for example, a lease agreement or a certificate of ownership of housing;
  8. declaration of loyalty to Poland;
  9. birth certificate of children: if you have children.
