RELOCATION OF BIOMETRIC DOCUMENTS

Reading time: 2 min.

More and more citizens of Ukraine are becoming owners of biometric documents. Since their introduction, the Migration Service has already issued over 4 million ID cards (since January 2016) and over 16 million passports of a citizen of Ukraine for traveling abroad (since January 2015).

An ID card is first issued free of charge after reaching the age of 14, and a passport of a citizen of Ukraine for travel abroad can be issued even to newborn children. At the same time, the age at which Ukrainians become biometric document holders is very diverse.

The statistics available to the Migration Service for ID Cards show that they are most often drawn up by young people and middle-aged people. However, it is also common for older people: since January 2016, over 29,000 citizens aged 71 to 90 years and over 500 ages 91 to 110 have been holders of the new passport.

As for the passport of a citizen of Ukraine for traveling abroad, it can be issued from birth - for a period of 4 years, and after reaching 16 years - for a period of 10 years. As with the ID card situation, foreign passports are often issued by young people and middle-aged people. But children and the elderly are also quite active travelers. Since January 2015, over 2.2 million passports have been issued for children aged 0 to 12 years, over 179 thousand for citizens aged 71 to 90 years and 740 for persons aged 91 to 110 years .

Both the internal (ID card) and the foreign passports are identity documents and determine the identity of the person to the state. Both documents comply with the most up-to-date international standards in the field of document security and, thanks to the built-in electronic chip, are protected from tampering, copying and theft of personal data. Moreover, the use of electronic services and services, which are currently being actively implemented in Ukraine, will be made available primarily to biometric document owners.
